Stadtkirche and Kanzleistraße

back to overview

The Stadtkirche or city church with its two slate-tiled towers, which are connected to each other by a stone tower bridge, belong to the city’s landmarks. For centuries the Stadtkirche has characterised Bayreuth’s cityscape and is also one of the most important Gothic ecclesiastical buildings in Upper Franconia. In the late Middle Ages, the church was a gathering point for pilgrims walking along the Franconia Way of St. James, located between the villages of Marktschorgast and Creußen, on their way to their final destination, the tomb of the apostle James in distant Santiago de Compostela. By the way, the town’s tower keeper, who used to keep watch for fire and attacking enemies, lived in the dizzy heights of the north tower until 1934.
