Old Palace
Even today the Old Palace presents itself as a powerful, monumental feature among the buildings on Maximilianstraße. The interior was destroyed during a fire in April 1945 and can no longer be viewed. A
castle of the Andechs-Meranier, a Bavarian noble family, that was probably
already built here in the 12th century is considered as the nucleus of the
settlement. The old name of the town gives is also evidence of this settlement:
The name is Baierrute, which means clearing the forest of Bavarians. The Old
Palace dates from 1550. In the 17th
century, after the margraves had moved their residence from Kulmbach to
Bayreuth, it was enlarged. Margrave Christian Ernst commissioned the design of
a theatre room for the occasion of his marriage to Princess Sophie Luise of
Wuerttemberg.
