New Palace
After the fire in the Old Palace in 1753, the Margrave couple Friedrich and Wilhelmine commissioned the French architect Joseph Saint-Pierre to construct a new building. Saint-Pierre, the royal Hofbauinspektor, or inspector of royal buildings, had already designed the Margravial Opera House. It took only two years to complete the construction of the New Palace. Some already existing structures were integrated into the new building complex. If you look closely, you can see this even today. For example, the Palais Meyern that had been built shortly before, became part of the right wing of the Palace.
