Jean Paul Platz / Friedrichstraße

back to overview

The architectural focal point on Friedrichstraße is the former grammar school located at the southern side of Jean Paul Platz. Johann David Räntz provided the plans for the construction of this building, which was carried out between 1732 and 1734. The poet Jean Paul gave this market square its name. His larger-than-life monument is the dominant feature of the square to this day. In the 19th century, the sculptor Ludwig Michael von Schwanthaler cast this sculpture in bronze.
