Festival Theatre
Originally, the composer Richard Wagner had planned to perform his works at the Margravial Opera House of Bayreuth. But when he viewed the building in 1871, he realized that the pretentious Baroque theatre was not suitable at all. So the question of the location for the festival remained unanswered. Only one thing was certain: The festival must take place in Bavaria, the dominion of his patron, King Ludwig II. He was looking for a building without constant theatre performances. Bayreuth seemed ideal! It was located virtually in the centre of the German Reich, half-way between Munich and the new capital, Berlin.
