Eremitage - Old Palace

back to overview

The “Old Palace“ of the Eremitage was built between 1715 and 1719.  Margrave Georg Wilhelm had commissioned his royal architect, Johann David Räntz. This structure already gave the contemporaries the impression that it “was constructed from a single rock.” Tuff stones lean against the walls. The chimneys are shaped like irregular rock piles. Originally bushes grew on them. In the north, a water cascade had been created sloping downhill in the style of an Italian terraced garden. Several years ago, it was restored according to the old plans. In the west, the palace was separated by a large labyrinth garden from meadows and fields. The entire park was without walkways and avenues which was unique for a Baroque garden of that time.
